Half Dome, Yosemite National Park

I've been an avid hiker, backpacker, and climber since 1993, after first summiting Half Dome in Yosemite National Park. Since then, I've been hooked.

I've trekked throughout the Sierra Nevada, Rocky, Great Smoky, and Appalachian Mountain ranges. I've hiked through most of the U.S. national parks as well as the volcanoes surrounding Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. My favorite climbing location is Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming.

In September 2015, a group of buddies and I had a failed summit attempt on Mt. Rainier, in the Cascade Mountain range. Mt. Rainer is a stratovolcano sixty miles southeast of Seattle, with an elevation of 14,410 feet. It is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 contiguous U.S. states, claiming an estimated 400 deaths since 1897.

The Team the Morning of the Climb

Climbing Mt. Rainier takes a strong mindset. Thereโ€™s no โ€œperfectโ€ way to train for climbing to more than 14,400 feet. One must mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually commit and take it step-by-step. In addition to the physical challenges, climbers must be prepared to deal with cold, weather delays, lack of sleep, and team dynamics. The climb is so tough, itโ€™s become a training mountain for Denali and Mt. Everest.

The weather on the day of our climb was horrendous. We climbed in snow showers, 40-55 MPH winds, temperatures between 21-23 degrees (1-3 degrees with wind chill) and humidity in the low 80s. Worse yet, we were wearing five layers and carrying 60-pound packs.

What I learned on that climb is that the best vision, strategy, and preparation do not necessarily ensure success. An avalanche destroyed the ice bridge that our team was to cross enroute to the summit. Seven months of disciplined training for an unsuccessful attempt. Disheartening!

While descending the mountain dejected, I meditated on mountaineering as a metaphor for business. In these moments, The Management Sherpa was born.

From 2015 to 2019, The Management Sherpa was focused on pro bono consulting to nonprofits and ministries, and more of a personal brand. In June 2019, the company was incorporated to an LLC to provide management consulting services to small businesses, nonprofits, and corporations with revenues less than $100 million.

โ€œGuides tell someone what mountain to climb. Sherpas, on the other hand, let the climber pick the mountain to be climbed, then spend most of their time laying the ropes in advance so the climber can move a little faster."ย โ€” Bob Downs, Dream Big
