๐Ÿ’ก I often use metaphors in storytelling and building narratives with my clients and audiences to clarify concepts.


๐Ÿค” Metaphors go beyond just comprehension and demonstration. They change the way we think of concepts on an unconscious level.


๐Ÿค I used the aurora as a metaphor in a recent client engagement to break through an incorrect OD versus growth consulting paradigm.


๐ŸŒŒ The metaphor was based on an unexpected solar storm that enabled the aurora to be seen as far south as my backyard in Cincinnati, Ohio.


My client opened our conversation by asking, "๐‘ซ๐’Š๐’… ๐’š๐’๐’– ๐’”๐’†๐’† ๐’•๐’‰๐’† ๐’‚๐’–๐’“๐’๐’“๐’‚ ๐‘ญ๐’“๐’Š๐’…๐’‚๐’š ๐’๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’‰๐’•?" This allowed me to present the following:

โ–ช ๐ผ๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก:ย Effective OD recognizes the organization as a system where changes in one area can impact another. This systems-thinking approach helps in diagnosing issues and implementing solutions.

Similarly, OD is a dynamic process that evolves as the organization grows and responds to internal and external changes.

OD, too, is influenced by intangible elements such as leadership dynamics, employee engagement, and organizational values.

โ–ช ๐ผ๐‘›๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก: Recognizing and understanding invisible forces, such as motivation, morale, and leadership influence is crucial for driving positive organizational change.
